Additional
Information
- Numbering Authority Telephone numbering in Canada is under
the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) under authority of the federal
government (Industry Canada).
- mid-2002 - New Vancouver area code (likely overlay) An overlay
is recommended for the Vancouver-area area code 604 with a proposed
implementation date in the 2nd quarter of 2002.
- by August 2001? - New area code relief for 905 A new area code
will be required in the area code 905 territory by August 2001, according
to forecasts. This will likely be an overlay to the existing 905 territory.
In theory, an overlay means the same location could have phone lines
in different area codes. All local calls would have to be dialled as
10 digits (area code + subscriber number, whether or not the call is
placed within the same area code). At least one party disputes the estimated
timing when 905 will need a relief area code, particularly given that
current forecast dates are much earlier than previously estimates.
- 5 March 2001 - New Toronto area code 647 (overlay) Area code
647 is scheduled to be in service after 5 March 2001 for Toronto. This
would be an overlay to 416 area code, where City of Toronto subscribers
could be assigned numbers in either 416 or 647 area codes. 10-digit
dialling will be required for all local calls as of 5 March 2001, whether
calling to a number in the same area code or not. A recorded warning
message will be heard by local callers using the 7-digit format as of
8 January 2001.
- 25 January 1999 - Alberta area code split (403, new 780) Telus
announced that northern Alberta, including Edmonton, Peace River and
Fort McMurray changed to area code 780. Southern Alberta including Calgary,
Red Deer and Stettler retained area code 403. The boundary line lies
along an approximately east-west line, with area code 780 territory
north of Red Deer and Stettler. Use of 780 became mandatory 12 July
1999.
- 13 June 1998 - Montreal area code split (514, new 450) Area
code 450 was announced by Bellcore (the NANP Administrator at that time)
in January 1997 for a split of the Montreal-area 514 area code. Montreal
Island plus Ile-Bizard, Ile-Perrot, Ile-des-Soeurs and Ile-Notre-Dame
retained 514, with all other 514 numbers changed to 450 area code.
